UPDATE!!! We’re going to Cabo!!!!! I haven’t been this excited about a trip in a long time…in case you can’t tell! Matt and I tried to go to Cabo on our honeymoon in September of 2008 but due to Hurricane Lowell, our cruise ship turned around the morning we were supposed to dock and headed over to our 2nd destination a day early. I remember going to the top deck that morning to grab a coffee and I looked out and we were drifting away from the Island! The hurricane prevented us from being able come in to the port safely and dock. Total bust! We have been wanting to explore in Mexico together so we are really excited about this trip!! Honeymoon, phase 2! Haha. We still had an absolute BLAST together on our honeymoon, obvi, but it will just be nice to get to Cabo, once and for all
We are excited that we’re going with a group of friends we’ve never traveled with together, nevertheless been in Mexico with, so it makes it a different kind of fun and new. We will be celebrating a 30th birthday (Mr. Andrew Carrillo) and a few others’ I think, as well as getting the best R & R we can get! I’m just looking forward to sleeping in, eating when I want, drinking whatever and whenever I want, soaking up the rays with a bottle of Mexican beer in hand, sandy beaches, swim up bars, 24 hour room service, exploring with my hub… I guess you can say I’m looking forward to a lot!
I think it goes without saying that Matt and I could really use a vacation. It’s been a long year already and it’s only April. I can’t wait to vacay with you babe!! This will be a vacation we’ll never forget. I can already imagine how much I’ll miss the kids, as I’ve never been away from either of them for this long (5 days), but I’m going to try and not think about that. I need to think about all the times I say to myself, “I need a break! I need a vacation!” Once I remember that, I’m sure I’ll be just fine! They will be in great hands with both sets of Grandparents
June 22nd can’t come soon enough! Well, it sort of can… We have someone’s BIG birthday celebration before we leave! Miss Finnley is turning ONE the weekend before. It is perfect timing. We get to celebrate my sweet daughter turning one and cherish her, love on her and then exactly 6 days later get on a jet plane. Jake is excited for Finnley’s birthday too. It’s so cute! Any time I buy something for her party he says, “That’s for Fifi’s party Mommy? She’s so cutie.” He loves her! It’s the best. Anyway, we have Finn’s party and before that we have a few other birthday celebrations , a Triathlon, a Wedding and a Mud Run…then we can go. Wowzers. I just looked at my calendar and instantly got stressed. LOL. Good thing I’m an obsessive organizer! Hope I can keep this all straight….
I have been wanting to touch on this subject since I got into it about 2 months ago. When I first started Crossfitting in August of 2012, there was a “Running Club” held on Tuesday nights (I think it was) and I went to it a few times in hopes of just helping my goal of losing weight faster. I wasn’t interested in becoming a better runner or even interested in “liking” running. I just wanted the extra endurance to enhance my workout routine. Well, that soon ended around Christmas time and came back with a new face. It is organized and more importantly, programmed to help the participants improve their running while working on form at the same time. I never realized how much was entailed in the act of running. We’ve worked on drills that improve our strides, foot placement, arm placement, head placement, lean, etc. I never thought I’d be into this class as much as I’m into Crossfit. I’m hooked!! How is this happening?!?
Our box, BBCF started a Speed and Endurance team/group that is held on Tuesday & Thursday nights. It’s held by our Coach (and friend/athlete), Josh Cagwin. He recently got certified and has taken classes that have enabled him to facilitate this class and is very thorough on the fundamentals of running. In just the 10-11 weeks that Matt and I have participated, we have noticed an extreme improvement in our running, not only in the class but in our WOD’s as well! Now that’s something to be proud of! We both have mentioned it to each other saying that we never realized how much of a role that form played in our running. We now find ourselves running/striding with more ease, while also running faster and smoother. We’ve learned proper foot placement and great breathing techniques as well. It’s all good stuff!!
We’re really happy our box puts on a class like this because it gives us (and everyone else) the chance to reach goals quicker, whether it be for weight loss reasons, or for strength, speed, or improving endurance, or whatever the case. It’s just really great that we are given the opportunity to be a part of something like this. Matt and I both look forward to it on those nights because I think the main reason is because we have seen improvements in our running, week to week. That’s where the motivation kicks in, therefore resulting in “the itch.” We’re lucky to have the team of coaches we have at Boombox Crossfit. The programming is incomparable!!! They’re all so awesome and truly, genuinely care about the craft of Crossfit and how it helps and enhances the lives of others. We’re lucky.
Having been a participant in these running nights, religiously, I can now say with a smile that I can run an
almost 8 minute mile!!! My fastest time Continue reading
Triple Threat I said! And I’m not talking about Jake’s many talents or athleticism. That will be in the next chapter… I’m talking about my baby boy growing up into a BIG boy, sad but true. Matt and I have been talking a lot lately about potty training Jake, as he is almost two and a half and we think it’s about time. He is a smart boy and knows when he needs to go “potty” whether it’s #1 or #2 and will tell us from time to time that he needs to go…or sometimes, if he just went It’s the #2 that he’s more timid about than anything.
We bought him his own potty back in October just to have for him to get used to. It cheers for him when he flushes and it’s an exciting thing about going potty. We recently decided that this weekend is the weekend that we are going to give it a go! We are going full hands in, with great expectations but have promised each other not to be disappointed if he comes out of his “potty-training-weekend-extravaganza” still wearing diapers. We really don’t know what to expect as Jake has his own personality and will make up his own mind whether or not he is into it. He knows what treats, toys and surprises are involved in this process…but it really all boils down to whether or not he is READY. Please be ready!!!
So, just as he’s (hopefully) getting used to going on the potty and not in his diaper anymore, we pull out more tricks. Number two of his Triple Threat is his
Gosh, I think the last time Matt and I went on a vacation or just a get-away together was when I was about 37 week pregnant with Finnley. So, about 10 months ago or so? We went to Palm Springs (our usual spot) at Rancho Las Palmas Resort. I’m thinking a quick get-away would do the trick…but then again a big trip would hit the spot as well. We both have been working hard, going non-stop and a recharge is definitely in order…sooner than later! Sometimes just a few days away is all it takes!! So, where do we go?? What do we do?? Recently we started another challenge through our BBCF family/community. It’s the “Get Right For the Summer- 8 Week Challenge.” It’s not necessarily a Paleo challenge, but rather eating and exercising right. It feels good to be in charge of your health and to actually see a difference in how you feel when making healthy (and not-so-healthy) choices. It is pretty impossible (for me) to make healthy food choices 100% of the time. It just drives me nuts to be a complete health freak. But I support those who can do it. It’s just not me.
So for the 8 weeks, Matt and I really started off on the WRONG foot. We knew it was coming though and it’s just that this challenge started a little too early for us. So we started basically on week 2-3. It’s fine.
One of the biggest ways for us to stay on track during the challenge is Continue reading
Although we’re amongst one of my most favorite times of the year, Spring, we are also one day away from one of my favorite days of the year, Matt’s birthday! All of you who know me well, know that I love throwing a great party. This year, the month of March has got me hustling to get some major Spring cleaning done, due to our Spring agenda. We’ve got Matt’s birthday on the 19th, a few other birthdays in between (3 to be exact) and Easter at the end of the month! Although we’re only holding one of the events at our house, it’s still got me in major cleaning mode… and it feels SO good!! Time to freshen up!
First thing’s first. I went down to Home Depot and got some new bark/wood chips for our planters to freshen up and Continue reading
Things just keep getting weirder and weirder. I don’t know who we think we are, but apparently our conscience does. Recently Matt and I both decided that it would be a good idea to sign up for a Sprint Triathlon in May. Yes, 2 months away. Okie dokie!! Here we go!! I just finished my first 5K (running for a great cause) at Chelsea’s Run down at Balboa Park, and next up are the Open Wod’s for the Crossfit Games. Matt and I are committing to the next 5 Saturdays for competing in The Tri City Open. This will be a great challenge for us, but we’re really excited to just get out there and do it.
There are about 3 weeks in between the last Open WOD and our Spring Sprint Triathlon. We are in total training mode and it feels so good! I’m not saying that we’re going to smash this Triathlon by any means, but I will say that we’re going to FINISH it no matter what it takes.
It’s actually a “Sprint Triathlon” not a full blown Tri. So what’s that?
It’s a 400 meter swim, then a 10 mile bike ride, and then finished with a 5K run (3.2 miles). Not bad. Especially since the bike riding part is low terrain. There aren’t any hills or treacherous climbs. It’s around Mission Bay. And since I just finished a 5K recently, I feel like it won’t be the worst thing- I’m just nervous about being wet from the swim and then biking 10 miles and running after that! Whatever… if anything, it’ll be one hell of an experience. Wouldn’t want anyone else as my partner either!!!
Matt and I have committed to each other and work really well as a team, fortunately His strengths and my strengths are different so we use them to our advantage and each others’ advantages when in need. I would be kidding if I said that I’m not nervous, as I have really no idea what to expect. But, then again, what’s the worst that could happen? We’re out there exercising our bodies and putting our fitness levels to the test. How bad could it be? Let’s do this! I actually asked my Coach Eric Salcedo this question and he said simply, “The worst that could happen? Die.” Bahahaha!! C’mon Eric. If I die, it better be because a shark cruised into the bay and ate my ass. If I’m gonna go down, it better be a good story. For my kids’ sake anyway.
My motto for this year is to GO BIG. I’m not going to have the energy and strength to do these types of things forever…so let’s go, before I (we) miss the opportunity. Right?! I mean…RIGHT?!
Well, I don’t have may pictures from Chelsea’s Run except for the one up top that was e-mailed to me. But here are a few
These girls are some of my BEST of friends I consider family and I’m looking forward to posting picts from my BBCF family as well. Those girls (and guys) are just as huge of a part of my life journey. Really lookin’ forward to seeing how we do at the Open! Boombox Crossfit is one STRONG group of athletes. I know we’re gonna crush it! BBCF baby!!! Let’s GO!
FJS is 8 months! Where in the world did the time go!?! I swear Jake’s 1st year went by like molasses compared to Finnley’s and I can guarantee he has something to do with it. Keeping up with 2 is a whole lot different than what it was managing one. All of you out there with 3+ kids…wow. I seriously don’t know how you do it. But good job!
Finnley has surprised us from the day she was born. She is our crazy, wonderful, SWEET and beautiful little wild woman! She is 100 mph, 100% of the time- unless she’s sleeping. She and her brother have that in common. They both don’t stop! I suppose it’s a small dose of my own personality.
From birth (June) to 6 months, Finn has been the sweetest most cherished baby on this earth! I look at her sweet face and think how she can possibly do anything wrong. She’s just a peach! She rarely cries and is always so peaceful and content. There never seems to be a problem unless she’s tired or hungry…easily fixable. She comes to Crossfit with me (and Jake too) 4-5 days a week and rarely says a peep! She’s just always so happy. She definitely LOVES to be held and cuddled, like most babies of course. I just have been in heaven with every moment spent with my sweet baby girl. It’s has absolutely been just the craziest most beautiful blessing to have the two babies that we have. My heart is SO full of joy and happiness.
So, ever since Finnley turned 6 months, she has been on the GO! She literally started full blown crawling on her 6 month 1/2 birthday. Both Matt and I looked at each other and said, “Isn’t this early for her to be doing this?” We were in trouble. Ever since that day, she’s only gotten better. Faster. Stronger. Now she’s standing up on things, sitting up playing with her toys, switching from one hand to the other, holding her own bottles, saying DaDa (typical), feeding herself, gosh…what else. It’s just crazy I guess because it all seems to be going by really fast. Slow down baby girl! It’s actually pretty rad, this stage in her life. I like it. I just know next time I look back it will be when she’s 16 and I will ask where the time went then. I guess I will come back here to the blog…
Mustache shenanigans!! Aren’t we supposed to screw with them as much as possible while they’re young? Before I know it, they’re going to be embarrassed of me and not think it’s “funny.” Gotta get it in now! Mustaches, hats, sunglasses, accessories…it’s all hysterical.
There’s that sweet smile. I wish I could post a video on here from a walk that we took the other night. She was giggling so much. It was the cutest thing EVER!! I just die when I hear her voice. Ever thought of that?? What your kids voice will sound like? You can’t really tell until they’re about one…or two I guess. Jake started chatter boxing at like 10 months. But anyway, it is weird to think about sometimes. Finn has this deep, belly laugh when we tickle her and I almost fall over every time I hear it. It’s the best.
Finnley looks to her brother for “what’s happening next.” He’s so good with her, I really can’t complain. Especially for being
not even 2.5 years old. He loves her so much, there’s no hiding that. He asks about her if she’s not in the room, or he’ll wake up from a nap and ask what she’s doing. It’s just heart warming. He also rides over her fingers with his choo-choo train, grabs things out of her hands, wrestles with her without her approval and tells her “NO! That’s mine!” What are big brothers for, right? I can’t wait to see them grow up together. We had our children close together in mind that they would have a close relationship… Now THEY BETTER! Or else. Haha…
Can’t handle her sometimes. She’s got her Daddy’s perfect eyebrows, big blue eyes and the best butt chin on the planet. Her Nonny says it’s where she keeps all her secrets. I believe it. It’s her special trait, her beauty mark, that she started all on her own because no one in either family has that. Way to go Fifi!! I love you my sweet angel baby!
Some of you may already know this about me, but I’ll reiterate my love for crafting and making/creating things for all sorts of occasions. Recently I’ve been really in to making fun, crafty things for my new home. I’ve been trying to upgrade the looks of things around here since the day we moved in (2011). In some aspects, within the last year or so, I have surprised myself with the things that I have made or created just by getting lucky. Lots of trial and error for sure. Lots of Pinterest too! Check out my Pinterest page for some of my favorite “home” ideas; there’s some pretty great projects that I’ve pinned…too many! I’m happy to say however, this particular project was all me and yes, I will soon be pinning my DIY valance no sew project because I’d like to think that there are some people out there that would take this approach on a window valance. Maybe not. But maybe so. Guess we’ll see how many “likes” or “re-pins” it gets, huh? Continue reading
Dangit! I never really noticed how much I love coffee until I didn’t have any for almost two days. I had a headache and was super moody and short fused. I’m pointing the finger at coffee! It may not be the reason, but for now, I think it is. Just a few days ago I took back our coffee maker to Bed Bath and Beyond to exchange it (for the same one) because the coffee maker side wasn’t working right anymore…but I LOVE our coffee maker. It’s an espresso/capuccino/latte and coffee maker. We make espressos and coffee the most. We’ve only had our DeLonghi coffee maker for about 5 months or so and totally love it!! It saves us a fortune, considering before we had it Matt was buying an Americano from Starbucks EVERY DAY. EVERY DAY!!! Sometimes twice a day. He and my dear friend Brandi are so much alike. They depend on their 3:00 coffee to get them through the second half of the day. Me? Oh, my 3:00 drink is vodka. Either way, 2 Starbucks a day was costing around $6:00! What!?
Anyway, so needless to say, this multi-use coffee maker has saved us a ton of money and time. Above all, we love making and smelling coffee too Makes the house smell awesome. We use Starbucks dark roast. We usually get the most excited about it right after getting back from crossfit. Well, this week might be a little long The coffee maker was returned and exchanged but we are still waiting for it to arrive. Those of you who also have kids know how badly coffee can change your day! Well, not being able to brew it at home is quite an inconvenience, especially with kids at home. It’s not the easiest thing being able to pack up both the kids, one a toddler and one in a car seat, just to justify going out to grab a coffee. There’s a Starbucks right down the street (the only other coffee that we both enjoy to love and love to enjoy) but lugging both kids inside to grab a coffee, once again, is not EASY. How do I hold the coffee if I’m holding both kids? Bust out the double stroller for a coffee? Hmmm. I think no… This is all getting out of control.
Well, lucky for me, I have a drive-thru Starbucks a few more miles down the road from the local one! But, it never fails, every time I go to get in the drive-thru line, there is AT LEAST 8 cars in front of me…no joke. We’re talkin’ a 20 minute wait every time without fail! So…how about that drive-thru line? Is it mainly for lazy people? People with children in the car who don’t want to lug them inside? People who are desperate for a Starbucks but can’t find a parking spot? People getting multiple coffees for others? What’s it for, I would love to know? Either way, any of the above reasons for people to use the drive-thru are completely fine, I’m just wondering what the general consensus is? It’s like the line at In-n-Out. Never fails. There is ALWAYS a line. ALWAYS. It’s totally cool, because they have the best burgers, fries and shakes, so of course there’s always a line. Same with Starbucks and their coffee, I suppose? Is it because it’s the best? It would be sooo much easier if I knew that the drive-thru line wasn’t always as busy. I’d justify coffee all the time! That is…when my own coffee maker is broken Hurry up and get here, I’m running out of coffee money! I should be getting it back in just a few days…YEAY!
So, I guess the moral of the story is…COFFEE RULES, in more ways than one. Unfortunately…but fortunately too. Haha!
